Built for movement. Lightweight warmth without the bulk.

Drift 01 is the first piece created for Forgewell Outdoor — a technical Alpha Direct mid-layer built for cold starts, long miles, and high-output days where you’re generating heat, not standing still.

Made with Polartec® Alpha® Direct 90, this is not a traditional hoodie. It’s a breathable, fast-drying midlayer, designed to regulate temperature while you move — keeping you warm without overheating. Handcrafted in small batches in the USA, every stitch is intentional.

Features

  • Polartec® Alpha® Direct 90 active insulation
  • Ultralight and fast-drying — moisture moves through the fabric, not against it
  • High warmth-to-weight ratio built for sustained effort
  • Hood for added coverage on exposed ridgelines or cold mornings
  • Raglan sleeve construction for unrestricted movement and layering
  • Lycra® Power Mesh cuffs, hem, and hood facing — holds shape without restricting movement
  • Handcrafted in the USA in small batches

Fit Drift 01 is designed for movement, not gender. Two distinct patterns, each engineered to support how the garment moves with your body.

  • Ridge Fit – broader frame fit and straighter body lines, more room in the shoulders and chest.
  • Valley Fit – more contoured, closer fit in the waist, more relaxed in the hip.

See the size chart in the product images for garment measurements. Chest measurement is the most important. If you are between sizes, size up.

Material

  • Body: Polartec®Alpha® Direct 90 4004
Breathable active insulation that regulates temperature during movement
  • Cuffs, Hem, Hood Facing: Lycra® Power Mesh
Lightweight stretch fabric that holds shape without restricting movement
  • Thread: Gütermann Tera 80 & Mara 100 polyester
Built for long-term durability and performance

Care

  • Machine wash cold, gentle cycle
  • Hang dry recommended — avoid heat
  • Do not use fabric softener — it reduces breathability
  • Store loosely — do not compress long term
  • Alpha Direct is not recommended for bushwhacking or heavy abrasion use

A note on the fabric Polartec® Alpha® Direct is a standalone technical fabric — not a traditional fleece. Its open mesh construction means it breathes unlike anything else, but it also means it requires a wind layer in exposed conditions. Pair with a shell or wind shirt to unlock its full insulation potential.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Valley Fit and Ridge Fit?

Valley Fit is designed for a curved torso — narrower through the waist with more room through the hip. If your hip measurement is noticeably wider than your chest, or if you want a more fitted, shaped silhouette, Valley is your fit. It works well as a base layer or sleep top.

Ridge Fit is designed for a straight torso — consistent width from chest to hip. If your chest and hip measurements are similar, or you prefer a boxier silhouette that layers more easily over other pieces, Ridge is your fit.

Not sure which one? Take two measurements: chest (fullest part) and hip (fullest part, standing). If your hip is more than 2 inches wider than your chest, go Valley. If they're within 2 inches of each other, go Ridge. Still not sure — email hello@forgewelloutdoor.com with your measurements and I'll tell you exactly which to order.

Do I need a shell layer over this sweater?

In calm or sheltered conditions — no.
Alpha® Direct is a complete layer on its own for trail use in low-wind environments. You can wear it as an active insulation layer on cold starts, a midlayer when temps drop, or a sleep top at camp.

In exposed conditions — yes. Polartec®
Alpha® Direct is highly breathable by design, which means it offers minimal wind resistance. On open ridges, above treeline, or anywhere you're exposed to wind, pair it with a wind shirt or rain shell over the top. The combination is extremely effective — Alpha® Direct dumps heat and moisture during exertion, the shell manages wind without trapping sweat.

Think of it this way: Alpha® Direct is your thermoregulation layer. Your shell is your weather layer. They're designed to work together, not replace each other.

How do I wash and care for this sweater?

Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Hang dry recommended — avoid heat.

A few things that will kill the fabric over time — avoid all of them:

  • No fabric softener or dryer sheets. They coat the fibers and reduce breathability. Your hoodie will feel softer for one wash and perform worse for every wash after that.
  • No high heat in the dryer.
Alpha® Direct dries fast — hang it and it's ready in an hour. Heat degrades the insulation structure over time.
  • No direct iron contact. If you need to smooth it out, use a steamer or a pressing cloth.
  • Don't store it compressed long term. Store loosely. Compression over weeks or months reduces loft.

On trail: a quick rinse at camp and a night hung in your tent will have it ready by morning. Alpha® Direct dries faster than fleece — this is one of its most underrated features for multi-night trips.

One more note: Alpha® Direct is not built for bushwhacking or heavy abrasion. The open-knit structure is what makes it breathe — that same structure is less abrasion-resistant than a tight-weave fleece. Keep it away from rough brush.

How long does production take before my order ships?

Every garment is cut and sewn after you place your order — there's no warehouse sitting on finished inventory. That's why lead times exist, and why every piece is made right.

Standard orders: 3–5 business days production + 3–5 business days transit. Total time from order to delivery is typically 6–10 business days.

Rush orders: 1–2 business days production + 3–5 business days transit. Rush is a flat $30 add-on at checkout — it moves your order to the front of the production queue. It does not change the carrier or speed up shipping.

Custom sizing follows the same production timeline as standard. Email hello@forgewelloutdoor.com before ordering if you have fit questions — I'd rather spend 10 minutes on email than have you wait 10 days for something that doesn't fit.
