Built for movement. Lightweight warmth without the bulk.
Drift 01 is the first piece created for Forgewell Outdoor — a technical Alpha Direct mid-layer built for cold starts, long miles, and high-output days where you’re generating heat, not standing still.
Made with Polartec® Alpha® Direct 90, this is not a traditional fleece . It’s a breathable, fast-drying midlayer, designed to regulate temperature while you move — keeping you warm without overheating. Handcrafted in small batches in the USA, every stitch is intentional.
Features
Fit Drift 01 is designed for movement, not gender. Two distinct patterns, each engineered to support how the garment moves with your body.
See the size chart in the product images for garment measurements. Chest measurement is the most important. If you are between sizes, size up.
Prefer a hood? See the Drift 01 Hoodie.
Material
Care
A note the fabric Polartec® Alpha® Direct is a standalone technical fabric — not a traditional fleece. Its open mesh construction means it breathes unlike anything else, but it also means it requires a wind layer in exposed conditions. Pair with a shell or wind shirt to unlock its full insulation potential.

Most insulation traps heat while you move.
Alpha Direct's open knit structure lets excess heat escape — so you stay regulated, not soaked.
Outdoor brands design one fit. Most bodies don't fit it.
Valley and Ridge patterns are built for two different torso shapes. Same performance fabric, made for your actual body.
Mass production means no one's checking.
Small-batch production in Michigan. Each piece cut, sewn, and inspected by the same person who designed it.
Built for long miles. Made by hand.
Cold start hiking
Active insulation layer
Sleep top — multi-night trips
Midlayer below 30°F

Not designed for static use in wind exposure. Pair with a shell when temps drop and you stop moving.
Fit Guide
VALLEY FIT
Curved torso. Tapered waist, more room through the hip. Best if your hip is noticeably wider than your chest/shoulders.
RIDGE FIT
Straight torso. Consistent chest-to-hip width. Best if chest and hip are similar, or you prefer a boxier silhouette.
HOW TO MEASURE
Between sizes? Always size up. All measurements are finished garment measurements.
Valley Fit is designed for a curved torso — narrower through the waist with more room through the hip. If your hip measurement is noticeably wider than your chest, or if you want a more fitted, shaped silhouette, Valley is your fit. It works well as a base layer or sleep top.
Ridge Fit is designed for a straight torso — consistent width from chest to hip. If your chest and hip measurements are similar, or you prefer a boxier silhouette that layers more easily over other pieces, Ridge is your fit.
Not sure which one? Take two measurements: chest (fullest part) and hip (fullest part, standing). If your hip is more than 2 inches wider than your chest, go Valley. If they're within 2 inches of each other, go Ridge. Still not sure — email hello@forgewelloutdoor.com with your measurements and I'll tell you exactly which to order.
In calm or sheltered conditions — no.
Alpha® Direct is a complete layer on its own for trail use in low-wind environments. You can wear it as an active insulation layer on cold starts, a midlayer when temps drop, or a sleep top at camp.
In exposed conditions — yes. Polartec®
Alpha® Direct is highly breathable by design, which means it offers minimal wind resistance. On open ridges, above treeline, or anywhere you're exposed to wind, pair it with a wind shirt or rain shell over the top. The combination is extremely effective — Alpha® Direct dumps heat and moisture during exertion, the shell manages wind without trapping sweat.
Think of it this way: Alpha® Direct is your thermoregulation layer. Your shell is your weather layer. They're designed to work together, not replace each other.
Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Hang dry recommended — avoid heat.
A few things that will kill the fabric over time — avoid all of them:
On trail: a quick rinse at camp and a night hung in your tent will have it ready by morning. Alpha® Direct dries faster than fleece — this is one of its most underrated features for multi-night trips.
One more note: Alpha® Direct is not built for bushwhacking or heavy abrasion. The open-knit structure is what makes it breathe — that same structure is less abrasion-resistant than a tight-weave fleece. Keep it away from rough brush.
Every garment is cut and sewn after you place your order — there's no warehouse sitting on finished inventory. That's why lead times exist, and why every piece is made right.
Standard orders: 3–5 business days production + 3–5 business days transit. Total time from order to delivery is typically 6–10 business days.
Rush orders: 1–2 business days production + 3–5 business days transit. Rush is a flat $30 add-on at checkout — it moves your order to the front of the production queue. It does not change the carrier or speed up shipping.
Custom sizing follows the same production timeline as standard. Email hello@forgewelloutdoor.com before ordering if you have fit questions — I'd rather spend 10 minutes on email than have you wait 10 days for something that doesn't fit.
